Notea Firefox Extension
Current version: 0.1 alpha release - Install
Compatible with Firefox 1.5 (not compatible with Firefox 2.0).
Notea is a Firefox Extension for storing and organising local copies of online works. It optionally integrates with Connotea to allow easy sharing of bookmarks for your locally stored works.
Notea gives you a button for your browser:

How it works
- To save a local copy of a web page, click the Notea button in your toolbar
- note that this is different to the Connotea browser button
- This will reveal a simple form, similar to the Connotea bookmarking form
- the first time you add something you will need to fill in some settings before you can save the article
- Type in some tags, just like in Connotea, and select the other appropriate options
- Depending on your preferences, Notea will bookmark the article you saved to your Connotea library.
- To browse your collection, click on the down arrow next to the <C> button and select 'Open Notea Article Manager'
- To view a local copy of an article, browse to it in the Notea Article Manager and double-click the title.
Notea is currently at the proof of concept stage: it works well, but don't expect it to be pretty or fully featured. If you like the sound of it, install it and let us know what you think.
We're looking for:
- Feedback on the concept - is it a good idea?
- Feeback on how it works - let us know if you find any bugs
- Involvment in its future direction - let us know how it should develop, and get involved in that development
Notea is open source -- you can download the code and modify the extension yourself.
You can browse the source code at http://developers.connotea.org/repository/notea

Please report bugs on NoteaBugs.
How to install
- In Firefox, go to http://developers.connotea.org/notea/notea.xpi. Note that Notea is not compatible with Firefox 2.0 (yet).
- You will see a pop-up window that, after a few seconds, allows you to install the extension
- You will need to add www.connotea.org as an allowed site first
- Click 'Install', wait for it to finish, and then restart your browser
- Once installed you won't see anything immediately
- To make the Notea button visible
- customize your browser's address bar by selecting View > Toolbars > Customize
- find the Connotea icon and drag it onto your toolbar.
Notes for this release
Version 0.1
- The 'Get Authors' button is disabled, as this feature is not yet implemented
- Notea doesn't yet extract citation information
- The interface is just bare-bones for the proof of concept
- Some websites lose styling information when saved locally (e.g. nature.com and Wikipedia)
What's next?
That depends on your feedback, but have a look at NoteaDevelopmentPlan to see where it might go next.
