Overweight and especially obesity are associated with increased psychological disorder. Aspects of treatments for such disorders might be good additions to treatments for obesity.
 
Psychological threat and extrinsic goal striving

The authors wrote "Although people generally endorse intrinsic goals for growth, intimacy, and community more than extrinsic goals for money, appearance, and popularity, people sometimes over-emphasize extrinsic goals, to the potential detriment of their well-being. When and why does this occur?" Over three experiments it was found that psychological threat (existential, economic, and interpersonal) tended to increase focus on extrinsic goals.
