Fascinating and important research showing that data from national surveys carried out from 1981 to 2007 indicates that happiness rose in 45 of the 52 countries for which substantial time-series data are available. It seems that increasing economic development and, importantly too, increasing social tolerance and democratization have led to people perceiving they have more free choice and this, in turn, has contributed to higher happiness levels.

This 20 year study of nearly 130,000 men and women suggests that coffee consumption may be linked with some reduction in overall mortality probably via reduced cardiovascular disease deaths. It seems likely that this effect is independent of the coffee's caffeine content.
