A case-control study of the relation between housestaff coverage and 54 potentially preventable medical adverse events at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a 720 bed institution in Boston. While results indicate no association between unpreventable adverse events and housestaff coverage, preventable adverse events were found to be more likely when patients were covered by physicians from another team, particularly when these physicians were interns.
