Harmonising codification and socialisation in knowledge management
Dimitris Apostolou, Andreas Abecker, and Gregoris Mentzas
Knowledge Management Research & Practice 5 (4), 271-85 (Nov 2007)
The aim of knowledge management (KM) is to provide timely and contextual knowledge to decision makers. A comprehensive KM initiative should leverage the wealth of explicit and tacit knowledge residing in an organisation. This paper presents an ontology-based knowledge handling method and tool that aim at harmonising the codification and socialisation approaches to KM.

Engendering debate: credit recognition of project-based workplace research
Anita Walsh
Journal of Workplace Learning 19 (8), 497-510 (2007)
In the UK there is currently a national consultation on the structure/adoption of an academic credit framework for higher education. The purpose of this paper is to argue that the principles underlying such a framework, when applied in the context of a workplace research project, can facilitate debate between the academic disciplines and work-based learning practitioners.

Social networks and knowledge sharing in organizations: a case study
Laila Marouf
Journal of Knowledge Management 11 (6), 110-25 (2007)
Findings in this paper show that the strength of business relationships rather than the strength of social relationships contributed most significantly to the sharing of public and private knowledge in this organization. Specifically, the frequency of business interactions predicted the sharing of public non-codified knowledge, while the closeness of business relationships predicted the sharing of private non-codified knowledge and the sharing of public codified knowledge.

Exploring cultural impacts on knowledge sharing behavior in project teams: results from a simulation study
Sonja Sackmann and Martin Friesl
Journal of Knowledge Management 11 (6), 142-56 (2007)
The findings in the paper show that different cultural backgrounds of team members due to different ethnicities, gender, national culture or functions create a context of cultural complexity, which might affect knowledge sharing in a negative way.

Developing a web-based information resource for palliative care: an action-research inspired approach
Annette Street et al.
BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making 7, (04 Sep 2007)
General Practitioners and community nurses rely on easily accessible, evidence-based online information to guide practice. To date, the methods that underpin the scoping of user-identified online information needs in palliative care have remained under-explored. This paper describes the benefits and challenges of a collaborative approach involving users and experts that informed the first stage of the development of a palliative care website

Is OpenSDE an alternative for dedicated medical research databases?: An example in coronary surgery.
Angeliek Venema et al.
BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making 7, (22 Oct 2007)
When using a conventional relational database approach to collect and query data in the context of specific clinical studies, a study with a new data set usually requires the design of a new database and entry forms. OpenSDE (SDE = Structured Data Entry) is intended to provide a flexible and intuitive way to create databases and entry forms for the collection of data in a structured format. This study illustrates the use of OpenSDE as a potential alternative to a conventional approach with respect to data modelling, database creation, data entry, and data extraction.

Mary Cantrell and Paul Lupinacci

Embedding Information Literacy into staff development in an acute NHS.
Hadley, S., and K Hacker
Journal of Information Literacy 1 (2), (2007)
The aim of this article is to share experiences of developing an information literacy programme for NHS healthcare staff who require preparation for higher level study and for those without recent formal learning experiences. Initial evaluations concluded that the course was very clinically centred with a high number of nurses attending with a variety of needs. A more learner-centred, blended approach, including e-learning and self-study materials that will widen participation to nonclinical staff, support life-long learning and provide transferable learning is recommended.
