Neonatal circumcision: the controversy rages on
Suzanne Farley
Nat Clin Pract Urol 6 (2), 59 (Feb 2009)
The divergence in the opinions of these two authors is indicative of widespread confusion among practitioners about how best to advise parents who are considering circumcision for their sons.

Severe maternal hypertension lowers the risk of testicular cancer in the male fetus
Nat Clin Pract Urol 6 (1), 2-3 (Jan 2009)
The exposure of the fetus to altered levels of pregnancy hormones during gestation is thought to have a role in the initiation of prenatal testicular cancer. Maternal hypertension and preeclampsia reduce the transplacental passage of pregnancy hormones. Pettersson et al. have now shown that the risk of testicular cancer is reduced in men who were exposed to severe maternal hypertension and preeclampsia during gestation, but increased in those exposed to the mild forms of these two complications.

Testosterone skin patches improve libido in postmenopausal women not receiving estrogen
Nat Clin Pract Urol 6 (1), 4 (Jan 2009)
Transdermal exogenous testosterone improves libido in postmenopausal women receiving estrogen therapy. Davis et al. have now demonstrated that 300 microg of testosterone a day, administered via skin patches, results in a modest but clinically important increase in sexual function in postmenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder who are not receiving estrogen.

New gene expression map of kidney development
Nat Clin Pract Urol 6 (1), 5 (Jan 2009)
A new atlas of gene expression during multiple stages of nephron formation in the developing mouse kidney has been mapped out, representing the first genomics-level analysis of organogenesis in a mammalian organ. Comparison of this atlas with gene expression patterns in mutant mice might help the understanding of abnormalities in kidney development.

Is neonatal circumcision clinically beneficial? Argument in favor
Paul Austin
Nat Clin Pract Urol 6 (1), 16-7 (Jan 2009)
So, to circumcise or not to circumcise? Three RCTs have provided us with strong evidence that supports an association between circumcision and HIV prevention.

High complication rates challenge the implementation of male circumcision for HIV prevention in Africa
Howard Kim and Marc Goldstein
Nat Clin Pract Urol, published online 23 Dec 2008
This study revealed high complication rates after male circumcision in both the clinical and traditional settings, and shortcomings in practitioner knowledge, training and resources; a strategy to minimize unnecessary morbidity and improvements in circumcision techniques are required before circumcision services can be scaled up in countries with a high prevalence of HIV.
