To Study old buildings, it is necessary to study cultural aspects, hintory, place, environment, spatial arrangement, plan, shape, structure and construction, building materials, dcoration, and other architectural aspects. This article is a part of the result of the whole study about Architecture of the Noble Residence in Yogyakarta, studying especially the soatial arragement. The conslusion of this part of study is architecture of the noble residence in Yogyakarta having some abstract concept as a part of the tradition that couln?t explain rationally. Criterias to select noble residences to study are: the owner?s relationship to Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono, locations near kraton inside and outside fortifications, and recent condition. Four selected noble residences are: Yudaningratan, Notoprajan and Mangkubumen. This study aims to discover the traditional norms including regulations and beliefs that gave shape to noble residence?s architecture, to give reference for noble residence?s conservation and applied proportional design concept to modern vernakular construction. Abstract in Bahasa Indonesia : Kajian mengenai bangunan masa lalu, mencakup aspek budaya, sejarah, tempat, lingkungan, tata letak, denah, bentuk, struktur dan konstruksi, bahan bangunan, dekorasi, dll aspek arsitektural. Artikel ini adalah bagian dari penelitian tentang Arsitektur Rumah Bangsawan di Yogyakarta mengkaji aspek-aspek tersebut, khusus mengemukakan tata-ruang. Kesimpulan kajian dari segi ini, rumah bangsawan Yogyakarta cukup banyak mempunyai konsep-konsep abstrak, sebagai bagian dari tardisi yang tidak dapat diterangkan secara rasional. Dalem di Yogyakarta cukup banyak sehingga tidak mungkin diteliti secara mendetail semuanya, maka dipilih dengan kriteria : perkerabatan pemilik pertama dengan Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwana, lokasi sekitar kraton dan kondisinya saat ini. Berdasarkan kriteria tersebut dipilih empat yaitu: Yudaningratan, Pakuningratan, Notoprajan dan Mangkubumen. Penelitian bertujuan menggali kaidah-kaidah tradisional, termasuk aturan-aturan dan kepercayaan yang tertuang dalam arsitektur rumah bangsawan. untuk reverensi pelestariannya, dan dalam hal akan menerapkan dalam konstruksi modern (modern vernakular), agar dapat tercipta rancangan yang proporsional.
