Number of alcohol related admissions in England has doubled in 12 years

Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians ... said "Alcohol related hospital admissions clearly have an impact on accident and emergency departments. But more worrying is the major increase in serious liver disease. There has been an explosion in the number of cases of alcoholic hepatitis and liver failure resulting from alcohol abuse, with a doubling over the past 10 years." The incidence of liver disease, now the fifth leading cause of death in the UK, is increasing rather than falling, unlike other major causes of mortality.

Some types of anti-bacterial wipes used by hospital staff to clean surfaces could be helping to spread bacteria, researchers say. The Welsh School of Pharmacy found that MRSA survived on the wipe, and then contaminated everything it touched.
