Striatal medium-sized spiny neurons (MSNs) integrate and convey information from the cerebral cortex to the output nuclei of the basal ganglia. Intracellular recordings from anesthetized animals show that MSNs undergo spontaneous transitions between hyperpolarized and depolarized states. State transitions, regarded as necessary for eliciting action potential firing in MSNs, are thought to control basal ganglia function by shaping striatal output. Here, we use an anesthetic-free rat preparation to show that the intracellular activity of MSNs is not stereotyped and depends critically on vigilance state. During slow-wave sleep, much as during anesthesia, MSNs displayed rhythmic step-like membrane potential shifts, correlated with cortical field potentials. However, wakefulness was associated with a completely different pattern of temporally disorganized depolarizing synaptic events of variable amplitude. Transitions from slow-wave sleep to wakefulness converted striatal discharge from a cyclic brisk firing to an irregular pattern of action potentials. These findings illuminate different capabilities of information processing in basal ganglia networks, suggesting in particular that a novel style of striatal computation is associated with the waking state.

Cocaine-induced dendritic spine formation in D1 and D2 dopamine receptor-containing medium spiny neurons in nucleus accumbens.

Psychostimulant-induced alteration of dendritic spines on dopaminoceptive neurons in nucleus accumbens (NAcc) has been hypothesized as an adaptive neuronal response that is linked to long-lasting addictive behaviors. NAcc is largely composed of two distinct subpopulations of medium-sized spiny neurons expressing high levels of either dopamine D1 or D2 receptors. In the present study, we analyzed dendritic spine density after chronic cocaine treatment in distinct D1 or D2 receptor-containing medium-sized spiny neurons in NAcc. These studies made use of transgenic mice that expressed EGFP under the control of either the D1 or D2 receptor promoter (Drd1-EGFP or Drd2-EGFP). After 28 days of cocaine treatment and 2 days of withdrawal, spine density increased in both Drd1-EGFP- and Drd2-EGFP-positive neurons. However, the increase in spine density was maintained only in Drd1-EGFP-positive neurons 30 days after drug withdrawal. Notably, increased DeltaFosB expression also was observed in Drd1-EGFP- and Drd2-EGFP-positive neurons after 2 days of drug withdrawal but only in Drd1-EGFP-positive neurons after 30 days of drug withdrawal. These results suggest that the increased spine density observed after chronic cocaine treatment is stable only in D1-receptor-containing neurons and that DeltaFosB expression is associated with the formation and/or the maintenance of dendritic spines in D1 as well as D2 receptor-containing neurons in NAcc.

Highly enhanced Curie temperature in low-temperature annealed [Ga,Mn]As epilayers

We report Curie temperatures up to 150 K in annealed Ga1–xMnxAs epilayers grown with a relatively low As:Ga beam equivalent pressure ratio. A variety of measurements (magnetization, Hall effect, magnetic circular dichroism and Raman scattering) suggest that the higher Curie temperature results from an enhanced free hole density. The data also indicate that, in addition to the carrier concentration, the sample thickness limits the maximum attainable Curie temperature in this material, suggesting that the free surface of Ga1–xMnxAs epilayers may be important in determining their physical properties.

It is difficult to say who is behind the name Oblivion Dust. The members of this band have changed constantly, but if you ask us probably come to mind that the training was the best moment of his career: Ken (vocals), Kaz (guitar), Furuton (drums), Rikiji (bass) and May (guitar). His original style was created by a group of experienced musicians: they had been in bands before, and although the music of Oblivion Dust was comprised mainly of Kaz, a former member of (and hide the) Spread Beaver. Another fact that also made them stand out scene between the Japanese were the lyrics of Ken, who mixes English and Japanese, most of their songs are written and sung in the [proper] English.
