Sharjah’s Department of Culture and Information will host the 9th Sharjah Biennial from March 19 until May 16 2009. Under the Patronage of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, ruler of Sharjah and under the auspices of Biennial Director, HH Sheika Hoor al Qasimi, overseen by renowned Curators Isabel Carlos and Tarek Abou El Fetouh and led by Artistic Director Jack Persekian, the 9th edition of the Sharjah Biennial will transcend central themes and pre-cast frameworks, exhibiting instead a wide range of works selected by open invitation. More than 80 artists and performers are participating in the biennial, which since its inauguration in 1993 served to connect artists, institutions and organisations and to foster artistic dialogue and exchange. Sharjah Biennial ranks amongst the most established and prominent cultural events in the Middle East.

Art Dubai has become a cornerstone of the Middle East's booming contemporary art community. The 2009 fair will host nearly seventy leading international galleries in addition to a strong programme of artist's projects including the launch of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize and the critically acclaimed Global Art Forum:3.

Almost coincident in timing, two exhibitions apparently heading for a same direction have been inaugurated in Abu Dhabi and in Dubai. "Emirati Expressions" and "Re-Source" – these the respective titles – both focus on the Emirati contemporary art production, thus entering the realm of fascination clouding the UAE art scene. It is a matter of fact that awareness about the creativity made in UAE has not been promoted enough by local art observers and experts, who have embraced a tendency more than anticipating it.

This two-day symposium at Tate Britain and Tate Modern, organised by Tate and the International Curators Forum, in association with Nafas Art Magazine, brought together art specialists, artists and writers to discuss recent developments in contemporary art from the Middle East and its diaspora.
