The way in which we define people, even in so-called politically correct terms, has been bothering me for a while now. None of the terms make sense. They don’t compare apples to apples. When you meet someone for the first time, a series of assumptions go through your head, based on experiences that you’ve had and things you’ve been told. Whether we like it or not, we categorize people into sections we’re familiar with. The first thing people recognize is gender, which we can determine perhaps 95% of the time. A close second is race. If we wanted to, we could probably guess continent of origin. Perhaps even at a 80% success rate. But the thing is, we don’t. The reason is because of my previous point; that we’re not comparing using the same terms.
