DNA methylation is widespread and associated with differential gene expression in castes of the honeybee, Apis mellifera
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, (2009)
Our results highlight the potential significance of epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation, in developmental processes in social insects. In particular, the pervasiveness of DNA methylation in the genome of A. mellifera provides fertile ground for future studies of phenotypic plasticity and genomic imprinting.

PLoS Genetics: Assessing the Impact of Transgenerational Epigenetic Variation on Complex Traits
dx.plos.org
DNA methylation is defined as an epigenetic modification because it can be inherited across cell division. Since variations in DNA methylation can affect gene expression and be inherited across generations, they can provide a source of heritable phenotypic variation that is not caused by changes in the DNA sequence. However, the extent to which this type of phenotypic variation occurs in natural or experimental populations is unknown
