About 26 million people in rural China produce and use biogas for cooking and lighting. China has sound experience in running diesel and gasoline engines with biogas. Renewable energies are expected to provide 10% of the national energy consumption, electricity generated by biological materials to reach 5.5 million kW, and 2.2 million tons of ethanol and 200,000 tons of biodiesel are expected to be produced by 2010.

In incresing proportion of land worldwide will be cultivated for food and biofuel crops as well as pastures while forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Areas of agricultural land is expected to increase by ca. 7% while that of forests and other not agriculturally used land tends to decrease by 1.5% until 2030. Development of high-yielding crop and animal cultivars, diversification of land use, and improvements in cultivation techniques need to be implemented to increase agricultural output without further expanding agricultural land.

"The U.Va. team hypothesizes that feeding the algae more carbon dioxide and organic material could boost the oil yield to as much as 40 percent by weight, Colosi said.
Proving that the algae can thrive with increased inputs of either carbon dioxide or untreated sewage solids will confirm its industrial ecology possibilities — to help with wastewater treatment, where dealing with solids is one of the most expensive challenges, or to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, such as coal power-plant flue gas, which contains about 10 to 30 times as much carbon dioxide as normal air.
"The main principle of industrial ecology is to try and use our waste products to produce something of value," Colosi said."

Castor oil is traditionally known for the medicinal use of its main component, Ricinoleic acid, which excerts anti-flammatory effects. It, however, has numerous other applications in transportation, cosmetics and manufacturing industries. Leading producers of castor oil are India, China and Brazil who account for 90% of the area and production of castor oil, which is now increasingly traded in commodity exchanges.
