Fluvastatin inhibits HCV replication in patients who do not respond to PEG-IFN therapy

Fluvastatin therapy in patients with chronic HCV infection is safe but has modest, variable, and short-lived effects on viral load. This trial represents the first time an FDA-approved drug other than PEG-IFN or ribavirin has been shown to have anti-HCV activity in humans. A phase II randomized trial to assess the combination of fluvastatin with PEG-IFN and ribavirin is in progress.

Up to a quarter of patients with cirrhosis who undergo liver transplantation could experience an abnormal heart response during surgery that cannot be predicted by the usual diagnostic tools; such an event could reflect impaired circulatory function associated with advanced liver disease.
