The number of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases in Zhejiang Province rose by nearly 4,000 to 5,132 in about five days, the local health administration said Friday.

As five new cases of enterovirus 71 ( EV71) infections were confirmed in Macao, the total number of hand- foot-mouth disease (HFMD) rose to 99, local health authorities announced Friday.

As of 5 May, 4,496 cases, including 22 deaths, of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) due to enterovirus 71 (EV71) have been reported among infants and young children in Fuyang City, Anhui Province, China. There are currently 1,391 cases receiving medical care in hospital, with no additional deaths for 5 consecutive days.

China announced Wednesday new rules that require health care providers to report all cases of a viral illness that has killed 28 children and sickened thousands in outbreaks across the country. There have been 15,799 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease this year, the official Xinhua News Agency said, cropping up in areas ranging from the tropical island province of Hainan in the south to Jilin province in the northeast and Yunnan province in the southwest.
