Connotea was based on del.icio.us and has some interesting features that I found lacking, most noticeably commenting.

Good defense of tagging as a "personal" navigation aid as opposed to a public taxonomy. The real value to me is that they can identify other users that have bookmarked the same article and supply links to their collection of links.

A little history on social bookmarking: The concept of shared online bookmarks dates back to April 1996 with the launch of itList.com . Within the next three years online bookmark services became competitive, with venture-backed companies like Backflip, Blink, Clip2, Hotlinks, Quiver, and others entering the market. I didn’t know that this concept is ten years old. It’s one of the great things that internet has done with sharing the information with the others in order to build a strong community . But like any other system it has disadvantages that are they can be “susceptible” to corruption. Another disadvantage is that the tags are not always accurate.
